Kathleen’s Story
As a part of our ongoing series on former LegalWise participants who are now running their own legal practices, Kathleen Gomez, Esq. of Gomez Law PLCC reflects on her experiences and how LegalWise can help aspiring independent legal professionals like you.
What would you say to someone thinking about applying?
You spent at least two years in law school plus how many more preparing and in undergrad and now that you finally have that law license, take it for a spin! You didn't go to law school so that you could stand aside and let the rest of the world decide what our legal world should look like. Get out there, and help the people that you went to law school, to help! The incubator offers assistance to lawyers who want to blaze their own path to make sure you don't go down in flames. There are resources available to you to help you find your way as a solopreneur. When you realize you don't identify with your employer and you want to make a difference the way that only you can, turn to the incubator.
Before you encountered LegalWise, how did you feel about starting a practice?
I was nervous, unsure, I did not think I ever wanted to be self-employed. I felt that the future felt too insecure as a law firm owner and I was scared I would fail.
What did you learn in your time with us that was most helpful?
I learned that when you practice law, there is always room to learn more and to grow, but there is only so much you can learn in a classroom. The rest is getting out and doing the work yourself.
What are you doing now?
I own a growing law firm in Otsego, Minnesota with a beautiful view of the Mississippi River. I have a paralegal and a virtual assistant and we are looking for a family law attorney and an office assistant.
